WHAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT THIS CONCERT

  • W. Grant Still was the first black musician to conduct a major American orchestra, and the first black composer to have his opera performed by major American opera company.
  • Aria Un bel di (One fine day) is one of the most famous arias by Puccini. It is featured in several movies. In 1984, the pop musician Malcolm McLaren adapted the aria for his single "Madame Butterfly” a synth-pop remix of opera and 1980s R&B. The song, which appeared on McLaren's album Fans, reached top ten on British pop charts.
