WHAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT THIS CONCERT

  • J.S. Bach’s is a composer whose works are historically most often transcribed by other authors. Bach himself was also rearranging works by other creators, most notably his six organ concertos and six harpsichord concertos are based on works by Antonio Vivaldi.
  • British pianist Myra Hess (1890 – 1965) was one of the first internationally known traveling woman piano virtuosos. During the World War II, even during the heights of German bombardment, she organized hundreds of free classical concert at the National Gallery in London to bolster the spirit of Londoners.
  • The main theme of Beethoven’s final movement of Piano Trio op. 11 is a tune from opera by Joseph Weigl titled L’Amor Marinaro. The tune has a frivolous character, and its first line can be translated as: “Before I go to work, I must have something to eat!”
  • Both Piazzolla and Turina were exactly 48 years old when their wrote their works featured on this program.
