WHAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT THIS CONCERT

  • This the first time for the ASO to feature clarinet as the main solo instrument of a subscription concert.
  • 1789 was one of the unhappiest years of Mozart’s life. He was of poor health while his chronically ailing wife, Constanza, was experiencing yet another difficult pregnancy. His commissions and the teaching jobs had dried up. Despite his state of aching despair, he composed Clarinet Quintet, which is clothed not in some violent minor key, but in the radiant A-Major. It is music the seems to smile through the tears.
  • In art, the paintings of Claude Monet (1840-1926), especially his famous "water lilies", visually exemplify the impressionist movement. In music, the works of Debussy represent the extraordinarily beautiful musical palette of colors that personify Impressionism.
